Gillian Leigh Anderson, OBE born August 9, 1968 is an American actress. Her credits include the roles of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in The X-Files series, ill-fated socialite Lily Bart in Terence Davies' film The House of Mirth (2000), DSU Stella Gibson in the BBC/RTE crime drama television series The Fall, sex therapist Jean Milburn in the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education, and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of the Netflix drama series The Crown. Among other honors, she has won two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. After early years divided between the United Kingdom and the United States, she has lived in London since 2002.
Born in Chicago, Anderson grew up in London, UK, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, then moved to New York City to pursue her acting career. After beginning her career on the stage, she gained international recognition for her role as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the American sci-fi drama series The X-Files. Her film works include The Mighty Celt (2005), The Last King of Scotland (2006), Shadow Dancer (2012), Viceroy's House (2017) and two X-Files films: The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998). Other notable television credits include: Lady Dedlock in Bleak House (2005), Wallis Simpson in Any Human Heart (2010), Miss Havisham in Great Expectations (2011), Dr. Bedelia du Maurier in Hannibal (2013–2015), and Media in American Gods (2017).
In addition to film and television, Anderson has also worked on stage and has received both awards and critical acclaim.
Early life
Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Rosemary "Posie" a computer analyst and later vice president of Neurofibromatosis Inc., a West Michigan NF support group, and Homer Edward "Ed" Anderson III, the owner of a film post-production company. She is of English, German, and Irish descent.Soon after her birth, her parents moved to Puerto Rico for 15 months, then moved to London. The family moved so her father could study at the London Film School.[9] With her parents, she lived in Crouch End and Haringey in north London. She continued to keep a flat in London and spent her summers there. Anderson later said she had always intended to return to England. In Grand Rapids, he attended Fountain Elementary and City High-Middle School, a program for gifted students with an emphasis on the humanities.
Personal life
Anderson is an art collector. She used her first salary from The X-Files to purchase a lithograph by David Blackburn. Her collection includes works by artists such as Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt, Cindy Sherman, Francesco Clemente, Alexis Rockman, and Kiki Smith. Anderson is passionate about architecture and interior design; she periodically works on floor and house planning projects She has also expressed a desire to pursue mixed media ventures in the future.
Anderson is a committed feminist.In an August 2014 interview with Glamour magazine, Anderson said: "I have very feminist feelings and when I hear something or see people reacting in a certain way to women, I have very little tolerance for that."Anderson has several tattoos; as she has stated, all of them are in some way about "peace of mind, right thought, right action".She practices meditation daily.
