Rihanna full name: Robyn Rihanna Fenty; born 20 February 1988 is a Barbadian recording artist and model Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna moved to the United States at the age of 16 to pursue a recording career under the guidance of record producer Evan Rogers. She signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings after auditioning for then-label head Jay-Z.

In 2005, Rihanna released her debut studio album, Music of the Sun, which reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 chart and featured the Billboard Hot 100 hit single "Pon de Replay". Less than a year later, she released her second studio album, A Girl like Me (2006), which reached the top five of the Billboard albums chart and the album's single, "SOS", became her first US number one hit single, along with "Unfaithful" and "Break It Off", which became top ten entries on the Billboard Hot 100. Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, with five singles reaching the top ten, of which three—"Umbrella", "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia"—became number one singles in the United States, and her single "Don't Stop the Music" became a worldwide hit. The album was nominated for nine Grammy Awards, winning Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Umbrella", featuring Jay-Z. Her fourth studio album, Rated R, was released in November 2009.

Rihanna has sold over 12 million records and 29 million singles/digital downloads worldwide over the course of her four-year career,and has received numerous awards, including the 2007 World Music Awards for World's Best-Selling Pop Female Artist and Female Entertainer of the Year, as well as the 2008 American Music Awards for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist. Rihanna has had five singles reach number one on the Hot 100, tying her with the most number one singles of the 2000s, both for women, surpassing her rival Beyoncé. He has ranked first in the 2010 edition of the Barbados Cultural Heritage List. He is serving as an Honorary Cultural Ambassador of Barbados.

Life and Career

Rihanna was born on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados, to Ronald Fenty, a warehouse supervisor, and Monica Fenty, an accountant.Her mother, a native of Guyana, is Afro-Guyanese and her father is Barbadian and Irish.[13] She is the eldest of three siblings; she has two younger brothers, Rory and Rajd Fenty.She began singing at the age of seven. Her father's severe cocaine addiction and her parents' troubled marriage had a profound effect on her childhood. Her parents' marriage broke up when she was fourteen. Rihanna attended Charles F. Broome Memorial School, an elementary school in Barbados, and then Combermere School, where at the age of fifteen she formed a musical trio with two classmates. In 2004, she won the Miss Combermere beauty pageant.She was a sub-military student in a program that trained with the Barbados Army, and her drill sergeant was named Shontelle.

At age 15, she formed a girl group with two classmates.[14] In 2003, some friends introduced Rihanna and her choir friends to record producer Evan Rodgers, who was on vacation in Barbados with his wife. The group auditioned for Rodgers, who said "the moment Rihanna walked into the room, it was like those two girls didn't even exist." While auditioning for Rodgers, Rihanna sang a cover of Destiny's Child's "Emotion".The following year, Rihanna and her mother moved into Rodgers' home in Stamford, Connecticut. She then moved back to the United States with Rodgers and his wife just after she turned 16.Carl Sturken helped Rihanna record a four-song demo that included the ballad "Last Time", a cover of Whitney Houston's hit "For the Love of You"and her first hit single "Pon de Replay", which was sent to various recording companies. The demo took a year to record as she was still in school and only recorded during the summer and Christmas holidays Rihanna's demo made its way to Def Jam, who invited her to audition for the label's then-president, Jay-Z. She was promptly signed.
