Priya Punia was born on 6 August 1996 in a middle-class family of Rajasthan. His father Surendra Punia worked as a head clerk in the Survey of India in Jaipur, Rajasthan. His mother is a housewife. Priya also has a younger brother named Rahul Punia. He completed his education from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi. Priya used to play badminton in her childhood but later she became interested in cricket. At the age of nine, he joined the Surana Academy of Cricket in Rajasthan.
Priya took cricket coaching from Rajkumar Sharma in Delhi for seven years. Rajkumar is also known as the trainer of Indian captain Virat Kohli as well. Priya made her domestic debut for Delhi Women's team in the 2016 T20 against Hyderabad in Bengaluru. He also made it to the senior Delhi team in the One Day Championship held in Bengaluru. The young cannon managed to score 50 runs at an average of 407 in only eight matches. Priya also represented North Zone in 2015, where she played some big innings and impressed the selectors. Due to his amazing play in the domestic unit, he got a call to wear the national jersey.
Priya Punia's international debut
In December 2018, he was named in India's squad for the series against New Zealand. On 6 February 2019, she made her debut for India in Women's Twenty20 International cricket (WT20I), playing against New Zealand Women. In September 2019, she was selected to be a part of India's Women's One Day International (WODI) squad for the series against South Africa. Her women's ODI debut for India came on 9 October 2019 in the match against South Africa.
In May 2021, she was selected to represent India in the Test squad for the one-off match against the England women's cricket team. Recently on 9 July 2023, BCCI announced the Indian women's team for the ODI series against Bangladesh. In this series, cricketer Priya Punia has been made a part of the team.
Cricketer Priya Punia showed immense determination in carving her own path to success. Despite being offered help by an assistant to a high-ranking BCCI official who had assured him of a place in the team, he decided to decline the opportunity. Priya's father Surendra was informed that the recommendation from the top official would secure her place in the Indian team. However, Priya recognized the importance of earning her place on merit alone and declined the offer, saying, "There is no satisfaction in getting into the team on recommendation." His principled decisions reflect his strong character and commitment to achieving success through hard work and skill.
According to reports, Surendra Punia, who once had ambitions of playing for India, now coaches and mentors his daughter Priya. He played a vital role in making him the talented cricketer he is today. To support Priya's cricket dreams, Surendra took important steps including selling his property and taking a loan to buy 22 bighas of land on the outskirts of Jaipur worth Rs 1.5 lakh. The objective behind this investment was to create a dedicated practice network on cricket grounds for Priya's training and development.
The decision to build a special pitch and net for his daughter came after a bitter experience. Surendra was transferred from Delhi to Jaipur as an employee of the Survey of India in 2016. When Priya sought to register at a cricket academy in Jaipur, the coach there mocked her for being a girl and dreaming of making it in cricket. Hurt by this, Priya refuses to join the academy.
Seeing his daughter's love for the game, Surendra first approached a groundsman to make the pitch, but he demanded Rs 1 lakh. So, he decided to prepare the pitch himself.
