Melanie Thandiwe Newton OBE born 6 November 1972, formerly known as Thandie Newton is a British actress. She has received numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a BAFTA Award, as well as nominations for two Golden Globe Awards. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours for her services to film and charity.

Early life and Education
Melanie Thandiwe Newton was born on 6 November 1972 in the Westminster area of London, the daughter of a Zimbabwean mother and an English father. Her mother was a member of a Shona chieftaincy family, and her father worked as a laboratory technician and artist Her parents lived in Zambia, and she was born while they were in England visiting relatives; they then returned to Zambia, where her younger brother was later born. Because of this her birthplace has been incorrectly reported as Zambia in some sources, but she has confirmed in interviews that she was born in Westminster "Thandiwe" is a name of Nguni origin and means "beloved".
When Newton was three, she returned with her family to England, where they settled in Penzance so that her father could help run his family's antique business.She attended St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School. She later said of her upbringing, "From about the age of five, I knew I didn't fit in. I was the black atheist kid in an all-white Catholic school run by nuns. I was an anomaly."She began dropping the letter "w" from her middle name, making it "Thandie" She studied dance at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts , then at Downing College, Cambridge
Personal life
Newton married English film producer Ol Parker in 1998. They separated in 2022. She has two daughters, Ripley (born 2000) and Nico (born 2004), and a son, Booker (born 2014). All three were born at home. Nico is also an actress. Newton has been a close friend of Nicole Kidman since 1989.Newton is currently in a relationship with American musician Eliza Dias, better known by her stage name Loner.
Newton is a vegetarian and was named "Sexiest Vegetarian of 2014" by PETA in the UK. In 2007, after Greenpeace members placed a sticker on her newly purchased BMW X5 reading "This gas-guzzling 4x4 is causing climate change", she sold the car and purchased a Toyota Prius.
