Parvathy Thiruvothu Kottuvattu born 7 April 1988, also known mononymously as Parvathy, is an Indian actress who primarily works in Malayalam and Tamil films. She has received several awards, including one National Film Award, two Kerala State Film Awards and five Filmfare South Awards
Parvathy began her acting career in 2006 with the Malayalam film "Out of Syllabus" and received critical acclaim for her performance in the Tamil romantic drama "Poo" (2008). She gained fame with her roles in "Bangalore Days" (2014), "Ennu Ninte Moideen" (2015), and "Charlie" (2015). Her success continued with acclaimed performances in "Take Off" (2017), "Uyare" (2019), "Virus" (2019), and "Puzhu" (2022). For her performance in "Take Off", she received the National Film Award – Special Mention.
Apart from acting, Parvathy is a vocal advocate for gender equality and is a founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective
Early life and Education
Parvathy was born on 7 April 1988 in Kozhikode, Kerala to P. Vinod Kumar and T. K. Usha Kumari, both lawyers. She also has a brother named Om Thiruvothu Karunakaran.
During her schooling, her family moved Thiruvananthapuram and she continued her studies there. After completing her schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pangode, she graduated in English Literature from All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram. She was a successful television anchor in Thiruvananthapuram-based full-time music channel, Kiran TV. She is also a trained Bharatanatyam dancer.
Parvathy made her acting debut with the 2006 Malayalam film Out of Syllabus, in which she played a supporting role of a college student. Her second film, Roshan Andrews' Notebook, received media attention due to its theme based on teenage pregnancy. After being selected for one of the three lead roles from among five thousand applicants, she appeared alongside Roma Asrani and Maria Roy.She was also seen in Sathyan Anthikkad's comedy-drama film, Vinodayatra (2007), where she played a supporting role alongside actors such as Dileep, Mukesh and Meera Jasmine.
Parvathy gave three notable performances in Ullozhukku, Thangalan and Her. In the family drama Ullozhukku, directed by Christo Tomy, Parvathy played Anju, a complex character grappling with deep personal conflicts amid family secrets and grief. Critics praised her performance, describing her portrayal of Anju as "raw and edgy", balancing the emotional turmoil of her character. Parvathy's scenes with co-star Urvashi were particularly highlighted, with reviews noting how much of the film's tension and emotion was conveyed through their conversations, often without words.Her performance earned her the Best Performance (Female) award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. In the Tamil period drama Thangalan, directed by Ranjith and set during the British colonial era in the Kolar Gold Fields, Parvathy played Gangamma, a central character in a narrative that explores themes of oppression, caste dynamics, and exploitation. Her performance was praised as "fiery" and impressive, with critics noting her ability to bring depth and strength to the role of a strong, caring mother.Despite these strong performances, the film received mixed reviews. While it was praised for its bold political commentary and visually striking moments, the slow pacing and convoluted story were noted as drawbacks. In Her, directed by Lijin Jose, Parvati played the role of Ruchi. In the same year, she played the central character Sudha in Kaazhcha, a segment of the Malayalam anthology series Manorathangal, directed by Shyamaprasad, in which her performance was highly appreciated.
