Charlize Theron born 7 August 1975 is a South African actress, film producer, and former fashion model. She became an American citizen in 2007.
She achieved fame in the late 1990s after appearing in 2 Days in the Valley, Mighty Joe Young, The Devil's Avocet, and The Cider House Rules. She attracted critical attention and won an Academy Award for her role as the murderous Ellen Voormus in the film Monster, becoming the first person from an African country to win an Academy Award in a major acting category. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in North Country.
Theron was born in Benoni, South Africa, the only child of Gerda Jacoba Aletta and Charles Jacoba Theron.Her mother is of German descent and her father is of French and Dutch ancestry; Theron is a direct descendant of early Huguenot settlers, and her great-grandfather was the brother of Boer War veteran Daniel Theron. Theron is an Occitan surname which in Afrikaans is pronounced "Tron", although she says she prefers to be called "Thron".Although Theron's mother tongue is Afrikaans,she is fluent in English and speaks some Zulu.
Theron grew up on her parents' farm near Johannesburg (Benoni). She began school at Putfontein Primary School At age 13, Theron was sent to boarding school and began attending the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg. At age 15, Theron witnessed the death of her abusive alcoholic father; her mother shot him in self-defense when he attacked her. Police did not charge her.
Theron lives in Los Angeles with her boyfriend, Steward Townsend, with whom she starred in the 2004 film Head in the Clouds, the 2002 film Trapped, and the 2005 film Æon Flux. She has said she will not marry until marriage for same-sex couples is legal.Steward Townsend has said he considers himself and Theron to be husband and wife. "We didn't have a ceremony," he said. "Put it this way, I don't need a certificate or a state or a church. So there's no big official thing to it, but we are married I consider her to be my wife and she considers me to be her husband." The couple separated in January 2010.
