Kalki Koechlin 10 January 1984 is an Indian film actress of French descent who made her film debut in Anurag Kashyap's 2009 Hindi film Dev-D. In this film, she played the character named Chandramukhi.
Early life
Kalki Kekala born 10 January 1984 is an actress and writer. Although a French citizen, she has lived most of her life in India. Known for her unconventional body of work in the Hindi film industry, she is the recipient of awards such as the National Film Award, Filmfare and two Screen Awards.
Born in Pondicherry, India to French parents, Kalki was drawn to theatre from a young age. She studied drama at Goldsmiths, University of London, and worked simultaneously with a local theatre company. After returning to India, she made her debut as Chanda in the 2009 drama Dev.D. and won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Subsequently, she starred in two of the highest-grossing films of their release years—the comedy dramas Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), both of which earned her Best Supporting Actress nominations at the Filmfare Awards. Kekala expanded her career into screenwriting with the 2011 crime thriller The Girl in Yellow Boots, in which she also played the lead role.
Kekala continued her association with commercial films such as the supernatural thriller Ek Thi Daayan (2013) and the musical drama Gully Boy (2019), as she continued to garner praise for her performances in independent films including the comedy drama Waiting (2015) and the slice of life film Ribbon (2017). She received further acclaim and won a National Film Award for her performance as a young woman with cerebral palsy in Margarita's Coming of Age drama Struggle (2014). Starting in the late 2010s, Kekala made a transition to web content and appeared in a slew of successful web series. She garnered particular praise for her portrayal of a lonely socialite turned self-proclaimed god in Prime Video's Made in Heaven and Netflix's Sacred Games (both 2019).
Kekala has also written, produced and acted in several stage plays. She co-wrote the drama Skeleton Woman (2009), which won her The MetroPlus Playwright Award, and made her directorial debut on stage with the tragicomedy Living Room (2015). Kekala is also an activist and promotes various causes ranging from health and education to women's empowerment and gender equality.
