Janmashtami History and Significance
According to the Hindu texts, Lord Krishna came into this world as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and destroyer of the evil on this day.
Ancient Hindu literature, including Bhagawad Gita and Bhagwata Purana, clearly state the story of Lord Krishna’s birth and how his maternal-uncle, King Kansa, wanted to kill him. And ever since his birth, every 8th day called Krishnapaksha of the month of Bhadrapada is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami.

Though in most North Indian states Janmashtami is celebrated on August 30, South Indian states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh celebrate Sri Krishna Jayanthi on August 30, Monday Janm' means birth and 'Ashtami' means Eighth. Lord Krishna was the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in which He was born as the eighth son of Vasudev and Yashoda on the eighth tithi.

A human pyramid is formed in order to break an earthen pot filled with buttermilk. There is huge competition and prizes worth lakhs are announced as rewards for these events.In Uttar Pradesh, devotees in large number visit Krishna temples in the holy cities of Mathura and Vrindavan on this day.

As a child, he is noted for his pranks such as the aforementioned butter stealing and images of him as a child often show him dancing joyously and holding a ball of butter in his hands.
As an adult, he is most commonly depicted as a dancer or a lover, often playing the flute and surrounded by adoring women. In one story, it is said that defeated the many-headed serpent Kaliya by dancing it into submission
