Vidya Balan born 1 January 1979 is an Indian actress who acts in Bollywood films. Apart from this, she has also worked in five TV shows.

Balan began her career with music videos, soap operas and commercial endorsements. She made her film debut with the Bengali film, Bhalo Theko (2003), which received rave reviews from critics. She later made her Hindi film debut with Parineeta (2005), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and her first commercial success was Rajkumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006), thus establishing herself as a successful actress.

Vidya established herself by starring in five consecutive commercial successes, which also earned her critical and award recognition. These were in the drama Paa (2009), the black comedy Ishqiya (2010), the thrillers No One Killed Jessica and Kahaani (2012) and the biopic The Dirty Picture (2011). The last of these won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Career

She was born in a Palakkad Iyer family in Kerala on 1 Jan. 1978. Balan grew up in Mumbai and studied at St. Anthony Girls' High School, Chembur. She later graduated in Sociology from St. Xavier's College.

Her film career began with the Malayalam film Chakram, starring superstar Mohanlal but the film was shelved. After that, she signed a Tamil film, Run, but due to some undisclosed reasons, she was dropped from the film after the first schedule and was replaced by Meera Jasmine. According to industry rumours, Balan was dropped from her second Tamil film Manasellam, starring Srikanth, due to non-performance and Tanu Krishna was cast.

 She then turned to television advertising. Since 1998, she has appeared in numerous television commercials, most of which were directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She has worked with singers and bands such as Euphoria, Subha Mudgal and Pankaj Udhas in supporting roles in music videos. Balan also appeared in a few episodes of Hum Paanch as Radhika Mathur, but was later replaced by Amita Nangia for the role.

Personal life

Her father, P.R. Balan, is the Vice President of ETC channel while her mother is a homemaker.Balan also has an elder sister named Priya. In a video interview, she said that she is very spiritual and has a strong belief in God and visits temples every Thursday.

The paparazzi have linked Balan to many co-stars but she has denied all the allegations and said that they are false.
