Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll born 2 February 1977 better known as Shakira, is a Colombian singer-songwriter, composer, record producer, dancer and philanthropist who emerged as a musical talent in the Latin American music scene in the 1990s. Born and raised in Barranca, Colombia, Shakira demonstrated her many talents while still in school, including rock and roll, Latin and Arabic singing abilities, and belly dancing. Shakira's mother tongue is Spanish, but she speaks fluent English and Portuguese, as well as Italian, French and Catalan.She also specializes in Arab classical music.
Her first two albums with local producers were unsuccessful. At the time, Shakira was not well known outside of Colombia. She decided to produce her own brand of music. In 1995, she released the album Pies Descalsos, which gained her widespread popularity in Latin America and Spain. In 1998, she released ¿Donde Estan los Ladrones? (Spanish: Dónde Están los Ladrones?), which sold over 7 million copies worldwide, making her a critical success.
In 2001, following the huge success of her music video "Whenever, Wherever", she debuted in the English-speaking world with her album Laundry Service, which sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Four years later, Shakira released two album projects, Oral Fixation Volume 1 and Oral Fixation Volume 2. Both have fueled her success, particularly the most successful song of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie"In October–November 2009, Shakira released her latest album, "She Wolf", worldwide.
She has won two Grammy Awards, seven Latin Grammy Awards, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award. She is the best-selling Colombian artist of all time and the second most successful Latin singer of all time, behind Gloria Stefani, who has sold over 50 million albums worldwide In addition, she is the only artist from South America to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, the Australian ARIA Charts, and the UK Singles Chart. Shakira's famous song "Waka Waka" was chosen as the official song of the 2010 Football World Cup. Shakira has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Shakira currently lives in the Bahamas. In 2000 she began dating Antonio de la Rúa, the son of Argentine President Fernando de la Rúa, a romance that made headline news in Latin America. In March 2001, he proposed to Shakira.
The couple has been the subject of numerous rumours over the years. In June 2007, Latin American media speculated that the couple had finally split. Recently, Shakira and Antonio were seen at a restaurant in New York City, confirming and denying the rumours. Shakira's future mother-in-law, Inés Periñán, claimed that the wedding would take place in September 2007 at Shakira's mansion in the Dominican Republic, but the wedding never took place. She also said that Shakira had already commissioned Argentine designer María Pryor to design her wedding dress. Shakira denied all of these in Mexico.

She used her middle and last names, Isabel Mebarak, and told the professor that she was visiting from Colombia, in order to avoid being recognized as a celebrity.
Shakira is the cousin of model Valerie Domínguez, Miss Colombia 2005–2006.
Shakira appeared in the 1995 Colombian telenovela El Oasis, in which she played the character Luis Maria.
