Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), better known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Perry rose to fame in 2007 with her Internet hit "You're So Gay" and released her penultimate single "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008.

Perry was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California by Christian pastor parents and grew up listening to gospel music. She began pursuing music as a career after obtaining a GED during her freshman year of high school.
She released a self-titled gospel album as Katy Hudson in 2001. In 2004, she recorded an album with the production group The Matrix, but it was never released. After signing with Capitol Music Group in 2007, she adopted the stage name Katy Perry and released her first mainstream album, One of the Boys.
Early life
Katy Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California.The second child of two pastors, she has an older sister and younger brother.Her evangelical mother, Mary Hudson, was raised in Southern California and had a "stormy first marriage in Zimbabwe".Her father was a West Coast scenester in the 1960s. Perry's uncle and aunt were director Frank Perry and Eleanor Perry.
Raised as a Christian, Perry was incorporated into her parents' religious ministry and began singing in their church at age nine; she continued to sing until age 17. She grew up listening to gospel musicand was not allowed to listen to what her mother termed secular music. Perry attended Christian schools and camps.As a child, Perry took dance lessons at a rec hall in Santa Barbara. She was taught by experienced dancers and began with swing, Lindy hop, and jitterbug. After her first year of high school, she got her GED and decided to drop out of school to pursue a career in music. Perry initially began singing "because I was at that point in my childhood where I would imitate my sister and everything she did". Her sister practiced with cassette tapes and Perry would take the tapes when she was not around. She practiced the songs and performed them to her parents, who suggested she take singing lessons. She jumped at the opportunity and studied music beginning at age nine until she was 16. She attended the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara and studied Italian opera for a time.
Personal life
Perry dated Jimi Klan Heroes frontman Travis McCoy, whom she met at a New York recording studio, for several years. After more than a year of friendship and casual dating, they became serious about their relationship just before she embarked on the 2008 Warped Tour. Perry and McCoy broke up in December 2008.The two began dating again in early 2009 and broke up a few months later. Perry is now engaged to British comedian Russell Brand after he proposed to her in December 2009.
